In November 1954, President William E. Stevenson created the position of Business Manager and appointed Lewis R. Tower as the unit's first administrator. The Business Manager's responsibilities included the supervision and coordination of the administration of non-academic departments of the college, such as buildings and grounds, residence and dining halls, all purchases, and the establishment of an accounting system. During the tenure of Tower, the College's physical plant was rapidly expanded and renovated. In addition, Tower supervised site properties, carried through negotiations for purchase and sale of College property, and aided various town projects. When Tower retired in 1971 the Business Manager's duties were reconfigured and the office was renamed Finance and Business Operations. Dayton E. Livingston, formerly Tower's chief assistant, was appointed as the first Director. In 1976 the office was renamed Business and Finance, with Livingston serving as Vice-President of Business and Finance. In 1988 Livingston retired and the duties of this office were reassigned to the Provost, Treasurer and the newly created office of Vice-President for Operations.
